The Gavrila Derzhavin Estate Museum

The Gavrila Derzhavin Estate Museum (118, River Fontanka Embankment) is a unique memorial complex recreated in 2003–2011. Besides the mansion where Derzhavin lived from 1791 up to 1816 and the Home Theatre, the poet’s city estate includes several blocks, the Orangery and the Garden.

At present, Derzhavin’s mansion (Central Block) houses the Museum of Gavrila Derzhavin and Russian Letters of the His Time featuring a literary memorial exhibition in sixteen rooms. The «Big Hall» with 2 rows of windows used for sessions of the «Lovers of the Russian Word» literary society, the «Straw» and the «Sofa» drawing rooms, the Home Theatre, Derzhavin’s Study, the kitchen with an ice-room, and other interiors were carefully restored with maximum accuracy. On display are manuscripts, books and items of decorative and applied art. Portraits of the hosts and guests of the house create a «presence effect» of a bygone era and its characters in the museum rooms.

The Eastern Block presents the literary exhibition «Owners of Russian Lyre. From Derzhavin to Pushkin». Displayed are paintings, engravings, iconography, medals, applied art, portraits of the most significant figures in literature, history and culture of the late eighteenth — early nineteenth century, copies of manuscripts of that time on archival paper, books, magazines, and other relics.

The Western Block features three permanent exhibitions: «In the White Gloss of Porcelain» (porcelain of the late eighteenth — twentieth centuries), «Pushkin in the Memory of Generations» (works of the artists of the twentieth century), and «The National Pushkin Museum. Pages of History» dedicated to over 100 years history of the National Pushkin Museum. They tell about the Museum richest collections and demonstrate items not included into the main memorial exhibitions.

The Derzhavin Estate Museum holds literary and musical evenings, scholarly meetings and concert programs. In July the Museum conducts the annual Holiday of Russian Poetry of the Eighteenth Century.
